Interpretative hiking

Comunitat Valenciana

Interpretative hiking allows hikers to get as much information as possible while they are out and about in the countryside. The way the activity is done takes into account factors like the geology of the soil, rivers and mountains, knowledge about the plant and animal species living in each ecosystem, or discovering how time has left its mark through the interpretation of cultural heritage.

Within the boundaries of the nature reserves in the Region of Valencia you'll find an array of trails and footpaths that make up the Region of Valencia trails network, plus interpretative routes and other hiking routes showing visitors the Region's most characteristic landscapes.

In addition to this impressive network of trails and footpaths, the Region of Valencia has a total of 11 routes belonging to the Greenways programme. These are old disused railway lines that have been recovered and reconditioned for use by cyclists, walkers and people with reduced mobility. Nowadays, they are an ideal way of spending some time outdoors and observing nature.

In the Region of Valencia it's possible to travel along historic Roman roads like the Via Augusta, one of the most important communication and trade highways in ancient times that ran through many of the towns along the Mediterranean coast and especially through the provinces of Castellón and Valencia. Along the way it runs through various protected areas, including the nature reserves of La Albufera and La Safor, making the route even more attractive. Archaeological sites, milestones (miliarium), villas and castles are just some of the traces left behind by the Roman empire as it made its way through our countryside.

Another option is to travel along and interpret the route known as Ruta dels Ibers, discovering what life was like 2,500 years ago. Enjoy Iberian culture while you visit archaeological sites, do some hiking and enjoy the local gastronomy!

If you want to find out about other hiking trails, take a look at the Region of Valencia hiking blog, which shows you some of the best routes and footpaths you can do in our region.
